Why should I use a Dedicated Server?

1. increased security thanks to VPN

Dedicated servers use a VPN that connects the systems to their own private network. This allows you to transfer files between devices connected to the network and store data on the server for future use. A dedicated server therefore allows you to reliably protect files in the event of computer loss or theft.

2. stable performance

Cloud platforms provide simultaneous access for multiple users, which may cause stability and performance issues. Unlike virtual cloud servers, where resources are shared among all customers, dedicated servers provide 100% of the resources for your processes. So you don't suffer from performance degradation and always have stable computing power for your purposes.

3. scalability

If you need to manage databases, dedicated servers are very helpful for such tasks. When selecting a dedicated server, you can use RAID arrays that provide a powerful I/O bypass of the SAN. With cloud servers, in most cases you will not be able to scale the hard drive I/O operations. As a result, only a dedicated server can achieve the stable performance of maximum IOPS (input/output operations per second) for your specification.

4. complete control

If you are using a virtual server on a cloud platform, you have to expect various administrative restrictions with many providers. The server performance is often not guaranteed. With dedicated hardware, you as an administrator have complete control over the entire hardware and can influence all system settings yourself.

5. Switzerland as a safe haven

Switzerland is not a member of the EU and is not involved in international conflicts. This means that stability and the physical and legal security of the server infrastructure can always be guaranteed.

The three most common applications

The main reasons for choosing dedicated servers are performance and security. Dedicated servers can provide you with enormous performance and 100% of the resources are provided exclusively for you. Why is this performance needed?

1. websites with high traffic

Thousands of user requests in one second? How often have we been annoyed about overloaded ticket shops or online stores! Popular websites should definitely run on a dedicated server.

2. multiple sites

A dedicated server is ideal for hosting multiple websites. A strong dedicated server can host several thousand pages.

3. game server

Game server? Exactly! Big traffic and heavy files! A dedicated server is simply indispensable in such operating scenarios.

Dedicated servers or cloud? What is more worthwhile for me?

In this part of the article we will show you how dedicated servers differ from cloud solutions.

Transparency

Visibility is the key to solving complex performance and reliability problems. With a cloud server, you benefit from scalability of resources. However, you share these resources with many other customers. If you have high transparency requirements from your customers and a private cloud is too big an investment, a dedicated server is certainly a good option to meet all requirements.

Backup

Backups allow dedicated servers to keep the processing power going in any situation. Not even cloud servers can provide the same level of reliability, since the computing hub of cloud servers is usually not linked to the data warehouse, which means that if a system crashes, all work processes stop.

Scalability

Cloud services often advertise scalability. In fact, with cloud hosting, scalability is much more convenient and requires no waiting. The whole process takes place online. A dedicated server gives you the ability to scale, but the question is: what do you really need? If your environment doesn't need to be scaled up many times over at the click of a mouse, it may be enough to optimize the server configuration and eliminate the bottleneck in the application.

Dedicated Server in Switzerland: How much does a dedicated server cost?

Depending on the parameters, the rental costs of a dedicated server can range from 129 CHF to several 1000 CHF. The choice depends on the following parameters:

  • CPU processing power
  • Storage/Data volume
  • Connection requirements/network
  • Long-term nature of the lease
  • further specifications
  • Can be viewed and directly assembled under configuration calculator

How much power do you need?

Slow resource operation may indicate poor performance of the selected server configuration. We offer several options with powerful computing capabilities based on the Intel Silver/Xeon E series. The ability to increase performance and seven different configurations allow you to choose the perfect option: from simple applications to resources that require maximum computing power.

Bandwidth

Depending on the size of the project, you may need a huge amount of server bandwidth. Usually, a bandwidth shortage occurs when the resource slows down while the computing power is not used at 100 percent. This effect is called bottleneck. Calculate the required bandwidth in advance and choose the appropriate option. Do not pay too much for a resource that you will not use at full capacity.

Quantity of data to be stored and availability of the backup

The larger the project, the more storage space you need to store all the data (see also Managed IT Security). Furthermore, the data transfer rate is important and depends not only on the bandwidth and processing power, but also on the speed of the storage device. With SSD disks you get the highest speeds and store data reliably while with classic SATA disks you benefit from a smaller price (suitable for an archive, for example).

Don't forget the backup to protect your servers from crashes, hacker attacks and the like. The more RAID arrays you need for your project, the more expensive it will be to buy or rent a dedicated server. Therefore it is important to calculate the amount of storage you need in advance. When backing up, you have the option of using your own system or, in our example, using our Acronis environment.

Which is better: rent or buy a dedicated server?

Recently this topic has been the subject of controversial discussions. What are the advantages of renting a dedicated server and is it more profitable? If we simplify the task as much as possible, we can put forward the following arguments for a lease:

  • Investment protection thanks to monthly pay-as-you-go cost model
  • Scalability even with unforeseen growth
  • Speed for a migration
  • Organization and services can be obtained from the provider. For example, you do not need to worry about a computer center evaluation.

Why do international companies rely on Dedicated Servers from Switzerland?

Switzerland is not a member of the EU and is not involved in any international conflicts. The stability and guarantee of the physical and legal security of the server infrastructure is an important advantage. In addition, Switzerland's ideal geographical location attracts many network operators, which ensures a stable flow of traffic and extremely rare connection delays. Swiss law and its position on the world map therefore make our country the best choice for renting resources for Internet projects.

Summary

In summary, we can say that dedicated servers, like cloud solutions, have their advantages and disadvantages. However, when it comes to large projects that involve high performance and complicated compliance requirements as well as individual technical requirements, renting a Dedicated Server is usually the best choice.
